Classic Mustang - 68-69 Mustang VIN Tag replacement
Some of you may be in the position I'm in where the aluminum VIN tag on the dash has corroded badly and not fully legible. I've found out that in my state (Indiana) I can make another VIN tag as long as the number matches the title and the fender apron. Of course, your state may vary on rules/regulations.
With this information in hand, I contacted Data Tag to get an estimate of replacement cost. They quoted $350 plus $40 for the rivets! Yikes!
So, I decided to try making one myself. I have managed to come very close to reproducing the 'blank' factory VIN tag. NDP has the border that can be applied. The numbers and letters are 3/16" and I have a set of stamps on order to stamp my number.
Now come the questions:
1. If I made these blanks to sell, I would assume that requires a license agreement from Ford, even tho I can't find a Ford part number on my old tag anywhere. Anyone ever go through that process?
2. If any of you are in need of the raw blank I could provide that for you and then you could get the border from NDP and stamp it yourself.
3. Would you think $20 a blank would be reasonable, considering it's about an hour to carefully layout, cut and form the blank? That sounds a lot cheaper than $350.
I'll post a picture of the blank if you'd like to see what it looks like.

Re: 68-69 Mustang VIN Tag replacement
I don't know who gave you the price of $350.00 but Kevin Marti provides the VIN tag for $35.00 and charges a couple of bucks for the rivets. I don't know the legal niceties but they are sensitive about making certain that the VIN number is accurate. The engine code is in the VIN number and if someone gives you a "K" instead of a "C" or "A" code, sells it as a factory HiPo then the buyer later finds out it is a bogus tag that you made you could be in trouble.
When I got the tag from Marti, I had to prove my VIN number was a legitimate "K".
His work is excellent, he has a great reputation and the replacement tag arrived in just a few days
BTW: He will also supply you with axle, engine, carburetor and if your Mustang was built in New Jersey, a buck tag.

Re: 68-69 Mustang VIN Tag replacement I spent the money and got a deluxe Marti Report plus the original window sticker (copy 2).
The sticker is original because the signature at the bottom is in lead pencil which you can't
copy. I had to supply a copy of my title to prove I owned the car as there is only one available. Don't remember the year of your car but I think Marti has documentation back to '67 or '68.
Proper docs also increase the value of your car. As a friend stated, the BS stops when the report comes out. Marti is Very accurate.

Re: 68-69 Mustang VIN Tag replacement I contacted Kevin Marti. He does the DOOR TAGS and not VIN tags. Hence the need to make the VIN tag.

Re: 68-69 Mustang VIN Tag replacement In the 1965/67 cars the door tag is the VIN tag. Did Marti give any reason why he doesn't make the VIN tags for the 1968 on up Mustangs? Bill Krieger

Re: 68-69 Mustang VIN Tag replacement Technically, the door tag is not the official VIN ... hence the verbiage on the tag about "Not to be used for registration" ..
The official/legal VIN is the one on top of the fender.

Re: 68-69 Mustang VIN Tag replacement My cousin ran into a title nightmare because her 67 had been titled using the door tag and not the fender apron stamping. Apparently the door had been replaced like a lot of cars and somehow it got used for the title. She got it straightened out, but it took a lot of effort with the VMB in Kentucky to avoid a state issued VIN tag. FYI...

Re: 68-69 Mustang VIN Tag replacement He said that he didn't pursue the licensing agreement with Ford to make the 68-69 VIN tag mounted to the dash.
I've contacted Ford to find out what process I would have to go through to make them for others. I'll let you know what happens.
