Re: [Classic Mustang] Low Oil Pressure Revisited

The nice thing is, this gives me some idea as to how to interpret the gauge
in the dash, as it just has "L------H" on it. When it's midway, looks like
it's at about 70 PSI. At idle, which is a bit to the right of the "L"
line, it's about 16 PSI or so.

My HiPo's oil gauge started to show low oil pressure (at "normal" rpm's) and as the engine/oil got hotter show almost no (read zero) oil pressure. I had the valve covers off and there was plenty of oil being pumped to the valve train so I suspected the gauge was whacko.

I was driving to a show a while back and was stopped at a red light - a guy walking by said "You know your car has low oil pressure" I told him no - the engine has mechanical valve lifters - it always "knocks" that way but he insisted that he could hear knocking that meant lack of oil.

So a couple months ago I replaced the oil sending unit ant "presto!" the oil pressure gauge woke up and read "normal" pressure.

My six cylinder 1966 has a rebuilt engine with 5000 on it and the gauge never goes higher than between 1/2 and H.

I don't think FoMoCo ever claimed that their gauges were perfectly accurate - just an indication that everything's okay under the hood.

BTW: After leaving the six-banger sit for more than six months and taking a lot of it apart to detail it, she started up right away and runs like a Swiss watch - 23 jewel. That engine was one of Ford's "better ideas!"  Nothing against the 289 which is a great engine but that little six is just a sweetie.
