check it out. First of all, the specs from Ford on this motor call for
50-70 PSI @ 2000 RPM (they don't say what it should be at idle). I let the
car warm up to normal operating temp, running my normal 10W-30 oil, and
took a series of measurements:
500 RPM (at idle, in gear) - 16 PSI
800 RPM (at idle, out of gear) - 30 PSI
2000 RPM - right around 70 PSI
So, assuming the gauge isn't totally whacked, I think I'm in good
shape. To heck with the $1500 rebuild! <grin> Anybody else concur those
readings are decent? One thing I noticed, by the way: at the lower RPM
(800-500 range) the needle liked to waver a couple PSI or so. I'm guessing
that's pretty normal - I've never had a "real" oil gauge before - but what
do you all think?
The nice thing is, this gives me some idea as to how to interpret the gauge
in the dash, as it just has "L------H" on it. When it's midway, looks like
it's at about 70 PSI. At idle, which is a bit to the right of the "L"
line, it's about 16 PSI or so.
