Bodywork/paint is always the most expensive thing doing a restoration. If
that's all the problem is, and if you can pull off the bodywork without
using 50 pounds of Bondo, then you'll have a nice little car to have fun
with. Since you are aware of some rust, there's likely other rot you won't
find until you media blast it all down to bare metal and pull up the
carpets, etc.. Mustangs are notorious for rusting at the rear quarters,
the front cowls and the floorpans. Coupes are also susceptible to rust at
the rear trim panel (there's a name for it I can't think of right now)
between the rear window and the trunk lid, where the rear window seats into
the panel. That's stuff you won't find unless you pull the rear window.
To replace the interior (dash pad, seat covers, seat buns, carpet, etc)
plan on about $800-$1000. Don't scrimp on that sort of thing. If you have
that nice a car, spend the extra $$$ to do it right with good-quality
components. You can often find Mustang parts houses that will sell a
complete "interior kit" with all that stuff, including headliner and kick
panels.
One other thing: if you do keep the car and paint it, remember to preserve
the door tag. If this is a pretty original car (sounds like it is), that's
a valuable piece of documentation.
