The light works off a simple idea. You turn on key giving positive electricity to the light. If the alternator or in older vehicles generators does not turn it would act like the negative light turns on. When it turns it then will create a positive turning off the light. The same wire coming out of the alternator to charge the battery also goes to the light. I do not know the exacts of your system, so I could not tell you if it does this before or after the regulator. If you take the time to diagnose with a tester or even a simple test light, you can do it, without spending a lot of money on a mechanic for him to do the same thing that you could have done.
If you don't have one already, get a maintenance manual and follow the electrical diagram in the back following the wires from the alt. to the light and see where the positive ends.
I work on all kinds of equipment from cars to big rigs to aircraft and I have found that most mechanical problems are simple fixes you just have to take the time to take up the adventure and find them.
Good luck on your adventure.
