> I have a '67 mustang and it has a straight 6 in it with a 200 engine and I was wondering why when it is driven for about 3o miles that it will cut out and pushing the gas pedal does not work. It is acting like it will die. I am a 23 year old female and I can not figure it out. I have changed the fuel pump (it was not getting a good enough fuel pressure) and spark plugs and the carb has just been rebuilt to "like new" condition. I noticed when I use fuel treatment and cleaner that it will run better for a little bit but after a while it starts cutting out again. Please help me I need to know I am trying to keep it "original" and I dont know what else to do please e mail me at blue_eyed_baby032002@... to help me please I can answer a few questions about it if you need me to if it would help

Jamie,
There are a few common causes for the symptoms you describe:
1. Fuel separation due to moisture in the gas - you can check this out by draining a quart of gas from your tank at the drain plug or wait until it happens and pump some gas from the fuel line into a quart jar. If you see what looks like water under the fuel then you will have to drain some of the fuel untill you get the water (or alcohol) out of the tank.
2. Plugged fuel pick-up. to check this you can pull the sender unit and look at the plastic "sock" on the end of the sending unit/pick-up or you can use a shop commpressor to simply blow the sock off the end by removing your gas cap and blowing air into the fuel line after disconnecting it from the pump. (blow the air back into the tank) When you hear a "POP" the sock is off and that clog is gone.
3. Using an unvented cap. No way to check this other than buying a new vented cap. The vent on an older cap can become plugged so do this if nothing else works. If the vent is not there then the pump will slowly pull a vacuum on the tank untill it can no longer get fuel or the fuel will "boil" (due to the vacuum) in the lines causing "vapor lock".
Dirt in the carb fuel bowls can partially plug the jets but you had the carb rebuilt so I will ignore that, a weak fuel pump can cause similar symptoms but you replaced it so I will ignore that. A pinched line or weak hose on the fuel tank side of the pump can cause the problem so check to see if they are soft - if so replace them.
Sounds like a lot of work but the checks go quickly and I am sure you are capable.
