Your diagnosis about the outer bearing being caught on the threads is probably correct. I've never run into one quite as bad as what you describe so I can only make suggestion based on assumptions and not experience. Seeing as the bearings are going to be replaced I would take some solvent and try to clean as much of the black junk out of the bearing as I could. I would then take a cutting wheel on a dremel tool and try to cut the bearing off. To prevent going into the spindle, once I got through the top portion and the bearings themselves I would make several small cuts into the bottom piece which is stuck to the spindle, then gently use a hammer and chisel to make the final cuts. Once you get everything apart check the spindle for signs of having turned blue. If it has, it's best to start looking for a replacement spindle because some of the hardness may have been tempered out of the old one which could lead to catastrophic failure and serious damage.
