You are, of course, correct. If there is a problem with the spark plug,
however, you've just introduced another variable into the equation.
(And if you don't hold the plug tightly against ground... well, you'll
still get zapped.) I do find the handle of a screwdriver to be a
satisfactory insulator. But either way, you'll be able to tell if there
is a spark! :-)
I suppose the smartest thing to do is to clip a timing light* on the
coil wire. Then if the light flashes, you've got spark. If not.. you
don't. *(timing light provides another variable into the equation.)
Now isn't that an arresting idea?
