Re: [Classic Mustang] Starting Problem (Help)

If you ran a wire from the positive battery terminal to the plus side of the coil and you still have no spark, it's not the ignition switch because you bypassed it. Just to be on the safe side, in case there's some kind of a short to ground, run the test again making sure there are no other wires attached to the positive terminal at the coil. If you still have no spark it's possible your coil may have gone bad. If you can get your hands on a known good coil you can find out whether or not that's the case in a few minutes.
One of the things which sends up a red flag is when nothing in the ignition is touched, the car won't start, and the problem seems to be in the ignition circuit. I don't know what kind of setup your are running but I have seen a number of times when a stock Ford timing chain with the nylon coated top gear will cause the chain to slip a couple of teeth. What happens is the chain wears and the nylon gets brittle from age and heat. Over time little pieces of nylon chip off the gear making the diameter of the gear a little smaller. When you go to start the engine, the slack in the chain is taken up suddenly, and it sort of "whips" against the teeth of the top gear knocking off more nylon.
It's easy enough to check. Turn the engine over by hand and line up the timing marks being sure you are on the compression stroke. When the marks are lined up pull off the cap. If you're not under number one spark plug terminal in the cap (if it slipped you'll be closer to number eight) then your chain has slipped. If the marks are lined up and you're under number one terminal then the only possibilities left I can think of is the coil itself or something else in the distributor has gone to hot rod heaven.
