I took the cable out of the housing and greased it with lithium grease.  that helped but still didn't fix the problem.(jumped around).  I am going to replace the gear at the tranny and see if that works.  Then the cable itself and finally the speedo since that is the most expensive part

Cable... and/or the speedo. Try replacing the cable first. If that
doesn't do it, it could be the speedometer.
