was hitting the shelves. While that contained overall indictments of a lot
of industry practices (styling, AT shift patterns, pollution, etc), it was
a severe damper on the Corvair's sales - and GM knew it at the time. Also,
2-3 years of lead time for the Camaro would be about right. The Mustang
came out quickly mainly because it was a "restyled Falcon". The Camaro
came out more or less as a response to what Mustang did in the marketplace
(I've always liked Iacocca's quote that "the Edsel was a car in search of a
market, while the Mustang was a market in search of a car"). GM was more
than willing to let Ford be the pioneer to see if it would end up losing
its shirt on the Mustang.
