I am a little confused on the year and quandary of the parts you've
identified. Others may be able to verify this, but I believe the change
over was in 1969 (maybe) or 70 (for sure) that Ford changed the water
pump inlet from left to right. It was just one of the many things ...
like pulleys and harmonic 4-bolt balancers and deck height and exhaust
pipe fitting and power steering hoses... that I found out about when I
dropped a '70 351w into my '68.
It was past midnight - as when most of these things happen - that I ran
into to this dilemma of yours. Water pump inlet changed from left to
right between '68 and '70. So I did like another suggested - I spliced
the new inlet hose together with my old one using a piece of tail pipe
extension. (Well, it was what was available at the time.) It worked
fine. But I always knew it was there... if you know what I mean.
So... later on when I started having some over heating problems (due
mainly to an overly aggressive cam, a stock torque converter and an
original 2-row core radiator NOT meant for AC) that I went hunting for a
replacement radiator. I found that a '70 (or was it 71?) Mustang
radiator (4-core - and for an AC car) fit just fine - once I added the
saddle mounts and top clamp for it. This had the radiator outlet (to
the water pump inlet) on the correct (i.e., right) side.
I'm still not happy with the pulley arrangement, as all I could find was
a four-row crank shaft pulley; I only needed three. (So I have an
extra row).
I'm not quite sure how... but I ended up with a '71 shroud too. Fit the
radiator perfectly - It was certainly an advantage living next to Dallas
Mustang Parts, as I was able to take the thing out to the car and fit a
couple of different ones until I found this combination. Its a great setup!
As another suggested though... swapping the water pump is a LOT LESS
HASSLE. (really.)
