I just went through a similar situation this weekend. Removed the ignition key assy from the dash of my 64.5. While I had the original key, it was so worn that it could be removed regardless of the switch position. You might try a blank key and see if yours is in a similar condition. Try to insert the blank key and see if it will turn. If it will turn to the accessory position, then insert a piece of stiff wire (large paperclip works well) into the small hole next to the key and complete the removal.
Now for the no so good news. The whole assy was so old and stiff that even with they key the cylinder would not come out. I finally had to pull the front off of the cylinder (the stainless piece that the keys goes into). This allowed me to reach in with a pair of needlenose pliers and pull it out. Was still stiff, but did come out without damaging anything else. I also soaked the entire assy with wd-40 for several weeks and still had to fight it. After 45 years it did not want to leave!
