First try the neutral safety switch. The fact it started in neutral and not park is usually an indication of a bad switch. The switch in my car was long gone before I got it and the wires were spliced together at the firewall so I am not familiar with the factory unit. See if you can find a way to connect the two wires which go to the switch. If it consistantly starts, replace the switch.
