The chain can be checked with a timing light to see if it has slipped. If the timing marks are off so much you have to turn the distributor like 1/8 to a 1.4 of a turn to line them up then the chain has slipped. You've given us better information with your last post and while it's never a bad idea to check the engine with a vacuum gauge it sounds as if an experienced trans rebuilder should test drive the car. In your first post you said you couldn't get the car to go over 60 so we may have possibly miscommunicated or I may have misunderstood what you meant.
