I think a rear-end howl would go away just by letting off the gas, even in gear. I'll bet he doesn't have a tachometer.. and can't tell if the engine is revving up due to a slipping 3rd gear... which would also explain the 'winding' noise. Also if it was a wheel bearing roaring... that too would not go away when you removed power.
A good transmission shop should be able to tell him what's going on.

Have your friends pull the cover or pumpkin and check the rear end. If the howl went away when you were cruising in neutral you were spinning the rear without a load on it, so check that first.
