The rear end howling usually means that the gears have worn. I would recomend using just the 80w90 gear oil for the rear end (if your rear end is not leaking synthetic is also a good choice). I am not sure about the transmission since you didnt mention which transmission it is.

Ok so my transmission is leaking and my rear end is howling...both are
waaaay overdue for attention. Just wondering what some opinions are for
fluids. Anyone use the synthetic stuff like lucas in the rear end &
royal purple in the trans? Or should I stick to the regular stuff?
Rotella? 80 weight? 90 weight? 140? Too many choices!
