RE: [Classic Mustang] leaf springs

Corey, It sounds like what you are referring to are shackles, which are put at the rear eye of the leaf spring and the frame.  Standard leaf springs should do fine for most applications.  It takes a long time for leaf springs to loose their arch if not overloaded, or not initially shot peened or heat treated properly.  Heavy duty springs either have an extra leaf, or are made from the next thickest steel.  If memory serves me correct, Mustang springs are made from either .262 or .291 steel, and HD would be made from either .291 or .323.  Been awhile since I checked the print on these.  Remember, the more of a HD suspension you put in your mustang, the more harsh it will ride.  I would go with the standard ones.  Also, whatever you decide, be certain to load the front bushing bolt (about 5" long) with grease inside the eye.  These are famous for seizing to the inside of the front eye bushing, and they will severly test your religion and your neighbors religion getting them out.  Good luck.

Subject: [Classic Mustang] leaf springs

Years and years ago when my dad owned my Mustang, the stock leaf
springs started sagging (pulled a trailer) so he raised the rear up
with extensions (I don't know what else to call them). Well I would
love to replace the worn out springs with some new ones and do away
with the tacky looking "extensions". My question is: do I need to get
heavy duty or standard duty leaf springs? I am wanting to keep the ride
height as level as possible. I don't pull a trailer with the car like
he did. My main concerns are that the standard spring will still sag
and put me back at square 1 or that the heavy duty spring will put the
rear of the car up in the air. Any advice is appreciated.
