I never seem to get time to post much, but I do have a minute to throw
out my 2 cents on doors.
First, to be sure, I'd look into a copy of the factory body assembly
manual that Jim Osborn reprints. Worth the $15.
On my '69 vert, the glass went in first (on a 68 and earlier, I'm pretty
sure the vent window assembly needs to go in first), the inner and outer
beltline felts went in last by leaving the lower stops out so the window
will drop a bit farther down. Originals are stapled, aftermarket types
are pop riveted in. Repops brand comes with staples, but you gotta
drill all those holes...
Tape over all the painted surfaces is essential.
The 67 and earlier cars had a whole different channel system for the
glass to run on, so that will have some impact on the order of assembly.
I think you may be able to put all the inner door latch rods and inner
release mechanisms in last. Now that I think about it, you may want to
look at installing the door latch mechanism and outer door handle first,
as I doubt it will be in the way once installed and may go in easier if
the shell is empty.
It's not hard, but it can be tricky. On an episode of Overhaulin' when
they did a 65 FB, they were all perplexed on repopulating the doors and
were pouring over the assembly manual to figure it out.
I would also save final door gap fitment to the body for last, or
install it with the latch end a little high, as the door will sag once
weighted down with all that hardware...
Okay, maybe only a penny's worth, but there it is!
Hope everyone has a safe 2009 and is able to avoid the current economic
situation!!
Take care,
Pete
