Most trans have breather lines that vent the case to outside air. If the
breather line gets a hole rubbed into it it will let water in on a rainy
drive. or a deep puddle incident.

Me and a Buddy once discovered these the hard way, being naive teen
agers with a Jeep that was supposed to be unstopable, we got stuck in
mud and found out a few very expensive lessions about preparing an every
day Jeep to be a serious off road jeep... The main one being to always
check and make sure breathers and vents lines are attached to Trannys
and T-cases correctly/securely and make sure they are still routed up
into the engine bay (they come loose and get rubbed in half over the
years sometimes... And to always drop the fluids afterward even if the
breather lines check out.
