RE: [Classic Mustang] 1967 v8 swap?

My Daddy is a mechanic and he swapped a 65 6 cyl over to a 289 and from manual to auto transmission.  It does take some hard work which my Daddy has never been afraid of, but I’m thinking it didn’t cost much because my Daddy is one of the tightest people I’ve ever met when it comes to money.

And I'll take the other side. My reference is a convertible I ordered
in late 64. Money was tight in general, it was to be my wife's car, she
had a thing for gas mileage, so the only option we got was the top. At
about 80K miles I took it over and finished wearing it out. I rebuilt
it about 1980. The pics here were taken in 2001.

I would suggest getting an early Mustang in one of two conditions;
pristine or worn out. In the first case you can just drive it. In the
second you know you have to rebuild everything. Anything in between,
you don't know what you have and can't trust it. My view is, if you can
save money by getting a six do it. You are going to want to rebuild
everything anyway.

As for the supposed hassle of converting it to a V8, it's just nuts and
bolts. There are so many parts from other Fords readily available you
can rather easily build it any way you want. I say that with the
assumption that you will keep it basically period, not like the guy who
put the 65 sheet metal on a near new chassis\drive train.

Even keeping it rather original I would never spend the energy trying to
improve a 289. Ford already did it. It's called a 351W and is almost a
bolt-in. And the 302 gives you lots of choices while still using stock
parts. And that 9 inch rear end was a bolt-in.

Have fun
