If you wish to replace the column because of safety concerns in the event of an accident that's one thing but I doubt your problem is column related. I'd be more suspicious of the front end, possibly even a bad tire. Old Mustang columns are essentially empty tubes with a replaceable bearing up top. If you're getting vibrations and the steering wheel shakes, either constantly or intermittently, I am inclined to think the problem is elsewhere.
