Really need to know the details here.  Otherwise all is assumption. 
 
Car, model, motor, transmission, rear axle, mods, and most importantly, intended use.
 
Once you have that info you can then decide which way to go.
 
ex.  65 coupe, 289, 4 speed.  4:10 gears.  Great fun but not on a long trip...
or    97 'vert, automatic.  Same 4:10 gears, a BLAST and mileage does not suffer (maybe 1- 2 MPG, but that could be due to the extra attention the gas pedal gets......)
