I ended up putting a 6" long 10amp fuse wire on each connection to the battery side of the starter relay.
but your idea works too. Maybe I'll add that as well.

Sorry about the blank e mails. I've got a glitch in either the mouse or computer motherboard which occasionally causes the mouse to click on something when just passing over it.
While we're talking electrical protection I'd like to pass along something I did this past summer. Mustangs came with no protection for the charging system until 1969 when they began using fusible links. I don't think I'm alone in saying a fire is a big concern with older Mustangs, especially those (like mine) which are still running the original harness. If you're running a 42 amp alternator (or less) here's an inexpensive solution.
I went to my local NAPA store and bought a 50 amp circuit breaker. Part number 782-3001 is a 50 amp breaker with a bracket attached. I mounted the unit about 5 inches under the solenoid and ran a 10 gauge wire from the positive lug on the solenoid to the circuit breaker. On the output side I attached the 10 gauge wire which (on my car) goes under the dash, plus the smaller diameter (16 or 18 gauge) wire which goes to the voltage regulator. I soldered all crimp connectors, covered them with heat shrink sleeves, and it looks as if it came from the factory. It's a neat and inexpensive solution which gives you an added measure of protection and lessens the odds of electrical damage (or worse) in the event a short occurs in the charging system.
