Re: [Classic Mustang] Cam Thrust Problem

The rear camshaft plug would not affect the forward motion of the cam and cause the fuel pump eccentric to contact the timing cover housing. That can only be caused by something at the front of the cam. The only two things I can think of which limit the amount of forward travel would be the thrust retainer and the camshaft journal which rides against it. Even if there was a crank problem such as the other member found in his vehicle it would still not cause the eccentric to scrape the timing case cover. The problem, as near as I can tell, has to be up top. If the rear plug was too far back it might cause the timing gear to scrape the retainer or the block but I believe only the thrust plate and the front cam journal can wear enough to push the cam forward, scrape the cover, and mesh the cam and distributor gears too tightly.
