Re: [Classic Mustang] Cam Thrust Problem

After reading your posts again I am a little confused. In your last submission you said the cam gear is worn 1/8. Are you talking the top timing gear which bolts to the front of the camshaft? I misinterpreted what you said and thought you were talking about the cam gear which drives the distributor. So if I have the picture correct then your top timing gear wore 1/8 inch on the back side, which as Phil suggested, could be the rear cam plug, allowing the cam to move too far back. Plus, the fuel pump eccentric is scraping the timing case cover which would indicate a worn thrust plate or journal.
I've learned over the years that nothing is impossible and have seen cases where something which "just can't do that".........does. So if your cam is moving too far back causing the top timing gear to wear on the back side, then it's moving too far forward allowing the fuel pump eccentric to scrape the timing cover, I would say your end camshaft journals are probably worn allowing the cam to move too far forward and rearward. Sorry for the misunderstanding. As I suggested earlier, measure the end play. The wear limit is .012 (spec is .001 to .007) and I suspect you'll find you probably have somewhere in the neighborhood of .050 to cause the kind of problems you have described.
