Re: [Classic Mustang] 9" rear end

The center sections are interchangeable but the diff cases are not. If the center section you are getting has 28T gears  you won't be able to put 31 tooth side gears in it as the 31 tooth axle shafts won't pass through the opening in the side of the diff case. Now if it's the reverse you can use 28T shafts in a 31 tooth case as long as you change the gears.  Here is a link to a good 9" web site. If I remember right Ford Trucks used both 31T and 28T depending on engine size and other factors. You also may have to change the companion flange as needed and don't forget to change the collapsible spacer if you do.

Are all 9" rear end center sections interchangeable? I have a 71
Mustang with a 3.00 open that is making a whining noise. A local guy
has a truck 9". What do I need to know to make sure it will fit? Do
they take different axles? Thanks, Dave
