I've never heard that before, Phil.   I suppose its possible... Will you be doing this yourself, or will you be taking to a professional to strip it?  If the latter, I would follow their recommendation. 

I've always glass beading my smaller parts - and I've never had a problem with that.  You could also have it cleaned chemically, I suppose.
